The upper trails of the Cinque Terre are still dotted by villages. You can never go more than an hour or 2 without running into civilization. I have never felt unsafe and 99 percent of the hiking I do alone (or with the dogs which aren't much protection). It's always a good idea to have a cell phone if you are alone and, of course, use good sense!
